Novel Madness
In 2009, many of my friends are into novels, Last year a handful of my classmates had HSM novels while I brought along my Star Wars novels... Ratz!!! I heared 2 or 3 times someone comes up to me and says "Are you reading Twilight?" What's so nice about it... It's a girl's book... A more tough-ish and brut-ish novel will do good for me...
Now it got bigger... I brought in my first set of "non science fiction" novels... Yeah because all this while I was a Star Wars freak as my bro loved the Narnia, Harry Potter and LOTR novels... I purchased two of Mario Puzo's novels from KL during CNY and borrowed another from my grandmas house... I developed a liking for Puzo's novels after watching Godfather movies... And by dad also brought in "The Untouchables" VCD which is about Al Capone with a significantly fatter Robert DeNiro as Al Capone...
I recently finished The Godfather: The Lost Years at least 3 weeks ago... But now I just belek-belek only... Talks about Michael Corleone as Don during the events in between The Godfather and The Godfather Part II movies... The novel's background was written by Mario Puzo but he died before he could finish it... The author was Mike Winegardner who didn't put in Puzo's "christian" elements(The Sicilian talks a little bit about Jesus and the Catholic Faith). Instead, Winegardner used lots of 4 letter words and swearing... Tarnishing a good story... The book also has flashbacks of Michael's broken relationship with his father Vito Corleone... If it were without the profanity, I would read it over again 10 times...
This novel, The Sicilian is written 100% by Mario Puzo but has minimal input from Vito Corleone... Even Michael Corleone's role was only a supporting role along with Corleone caporegime Pete Clemenza... The story focuses more on a real life "Robin Hood" bandit from Sicily, Italy named Salvatore "Turi" Gulliano who steals from the oppresive Sicilian mafia and gives to the poor... And this Robin Hood is Christian... Yeah, talks about Turi Gulliano's conflicts of if he's a real robber or just a man doing a good deed by returning money to their rightful owner... Michael on the other hand, was given orders by his daddy Vito to return to America with Gulliano... Vito must need Gulliano so badly because his favourite son can't come back without a bandit. Pete Clemenza also arrives in the later parts to assist Michael... No profanity in this book but the story is really boring and draggy maybe because the Corleone's are not in it... Like Star wars without the Skywalkers... Anyway, haven't finished reading yet...
Fool's Die is also written by Puzo although it is not part of the Godfather saga... A seperate story about Italian-American immigrants trying to make a living in New York... Although not part of the Godfather, It incorporates the themes of typical Mario Puzo novels... Corruption, loyalty and crime... Haven't started reading this one yet... Not sure if it talks about mafia???
I hope to get the remaining two Godfather novels on my next trip to KL... But one will do, I won't want Winegardener's The Godfather's Revenge since I know there's gonna be lots of profanity... I just want Puzo's original The Godfather or maybe Omerta or The Last Don...
