In the popular animated show, we see the lions of pride rock fighting hyenas. But the show hasn't been fair towards the poor hyenas. In Lion King, the creator favors the lion but the truth must be spoken.
In the African plains, lions and hyenas are eternal enemies but the competition made is far from Lion King's animation. The tense battle is exploding with blood and action. In National Geographic, most videos depict lionesses chasing after fleeing hyenas, they do this just to mengelak the attacks, not because of fear. Lions have an overall stronger body but hyenas have much powerful jaws and tough bones meaning lions need to have a hard try at killing a hyena and hyenas are capable of injuring a lion with a single bite. Hyena troops contain more members than regular lion prides so lions are sometimes outnumbered but... 1 point for the hyenas...
The leader of the pride, the "alpha" male is a hyena's worst nightmare. Male lions have stronger bones, jaws and muscles and they have thick and tough manes that are too strong even for the hyena's fatal blow. Even if it is a single male lion against a whole troop of hyenas, the male lions have a speed up to 3 times faster than the hyenas which enables male lions to attack and dodge easily. So the score is 1 all.
Lions and hyenas have been fighting on eternal battlefields for millions of years. Both are apex predators in Africa, easily eliminating leopards, cheetahs and wild dogs as the top boss. Hyenas have larger armies and have stronger jaws as well as being more notorious but lions are faster, stronger and more agile.
So don't underestimate a hyena the next time you tune into Animal Planet or watch Lion King.
